Abrams: "It's Amazing"

From Sci Fi Wire:

J.J. Abrams, who directed the upcoming Star Trek reboot movie, addressed the film's new take on starship battles...

Earlier in the evening, screenwriter Roberto Orci described the battles as still maritime-influenced, despite the new, lavish look. Abrams clarified.

"They're big ships, so I'd say that there is a little bit of that, but there's a little bit more flash and fun and action than you've seen before," Abrams said in a group interview. "There are some pretty spectacular visual effects. ILM outdid themselves. It's amazing."

That shot is epic. Nice looking flares too. ;)

This is very cool. If J.J. Abrams is involved, it must be good. I also found out that the son of the late James Doohan (Chris Doohan) is in the movie too. He has a scene with the new Scotty, Simon Pegg. Got to love that!!!

Wow. Based on that image alone and the trailer, my predictions for the 2009 VFX Oscar are...

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Star Trek
Avatar

Yet another year that ILM might hold two of the three nominations. (Why can't this category have five nominees like every other category?) Everyone says Avatar will win, but pray that TF:ROTF takes it instead.

Really looking forward to this, the vfx work looks great from the quick glimpses in the trailer. I only hope that in the final film it's not so rapidly edited, and we get a good look at the work.

Would love some of the shots to really get across the huge bulk of the ships and the grandeur of being in orbit around a planet, like we see in NASA footage.

Can't wait to find out all about this work.

Boy, you said a mouthful. It's ridiculous that the visual effects award is limited to three nominees, while other similar categories (cinematography, film editing, etc) get five. But, as the Academy leadership has told the visual effects branch on several occasions, 'you're lucky to have three nominations, so get over it.' :(
